CyberNut iPad Compatibility

CyberNut’s phishing simulations + email reporting rely on Google Workspace add-on capabilities that are not supported on the iPad/iOS Gmail app for both faculty/staff and students. On iPads, phishing simulation and reporting can be done via browser-based Gmail (Safari) where applicable, but the experience is reduced vs desktop.

Training content, including staff compliance videos and student cybersecurity, digital citizenship, and AI media literacy training is fully functional on iPads, including through the native Gmail app for receiving training emails and completing modules.

Definitions

  • Phishing Simulations: simulated phishing emails sent to users; clicking/reporting triggers in-the-moment micro-training.
  • Email Reporting: user action to report suspicious emails to CyberNut via add-on/extension.
  • Student Training Modules: video-based cybersecurity/digital citizenship/AI media literacy lessons with optional quizzes.
  • Teacher Portal: classroom-facing portal for instructors to run in-class training and access the content library.

Current iPad Compatibility Summary

Works Well on an iPad

  1. Faculty & staff compliance training videos
    • Training emails can be received in the native Gmail app.
    • Videos and quizzes can be completed fully on iPad.
  2. Student training modules (cybersecurity, digital citizenship, AI media literacy)
    • Students can receive assignment emails in the native Gmail app.
    • Students can open links and complete training fully on iPad.
  3. Teacher Portal for in-class training
    • Teachers can access the content library and run in-class training on iPad.

⚠️ Reduced Functionality

  1. Phishing simulations for faculty/staff and students
  2. Email reporting for faculty/staff and students

Not supported on iPad today

CyberNut add-on functionality inside the Gmail iOS app for any user type (staff or students)

Root Cause

This limitation is driven by Google’s platform support for Workspace add-ons on iPad/iOS, particularly within the Gmail app. Because it is a Google platform limitation, it is outside of CyberNut’s direct control.

Workaround Recommendations (phishing simulations + reporting)

  • Faculty, staff, and students on iPads must access email via browser-based Gmail (typically Safari).
  • From browser-based Gmail, users can complete the phishing simulation flow and (where applicable) report using the browser experience.

Workaround Step-by-Step (Directions)

  1. On the iPad, open Safari.
  2. Navigate to Gmail in the browser and sign in.
  3. Open the CyberNut phishing simulation or suspicious email.
  4. Complete the simulation or reporting flow using the browser-based experience.
  5. For iPad-heavy environments, recommend a hybrid deployment model:
    • Training (staff + students): iPad-friendly and fully supported.
    • Phishing simulations/reporting: Prefer desktop/laptop when available; use browser workaround on iPad if required.
CyberNut is actively working on improving the iPad phishing simulation/reporting experience. We do not have a confirmed solution or timeline yet, but we are exploring better options than the current browser-based workaround.
